Since I've been able to post.
Seeing as China blocked blogger many moons ago.

To update you on my journey thus far:
I finished school on the 24th of June and it was a bunch of crap.
Got some grades and it was not grades I was expecting because I did so much work...
Point is I passed.
I went to Beijing for many days
I'm currently in Taiwan visiting Yu-Wei Tseng!!!! <3333

So I'm going to bed soon cause I'm exhausted.

Too hot to climb mountains...

Today it was 93 degrees.
It sucked so much. And that was in the MORNING. Ughhh This isn't even the hottest it gets. I now understand why people have sun umbrellas. (Luckily my umbrella doubles as both.)
I was going to go buy a new film camera with Momo today, but my debit card expired. -_-' So I can't get any money until I get my card in the mail. Wamppp.
Then we decided to climb a mountain. Lol. fun times. I took a nap and animated afterward. woooooo excellent!

Long day in the studio...

Sooo My friends and I stayed at the studio late...
Alang and I decided to take Xiao Cao home because it's really dark where she lives and it was around 3 in the morning.

However, I brought my camera, and usually there are no people out (except tonight there seemed to be a lot of people going about.)

I love watching people do Chinese paintings and Calligraphy. It's really exciting. When I was watching this other professor write calligraphy I got so excited and happy for every word he wrote down. It's exhilarating!! Amazed once again.

And of course me and Xiao Cao wanted to do some...paintings... of Wei Lao Shi. Lolol

When I thought that I should have gone to Ireland, or Germany, or followed an MCAD program.

But I knew that I have made the right decision in coming to China.

I knew that it would push me as an artist, I knew that I would find something here that I couldn't find in America, Ireland, Germany, London, any other place.
Because I am interested in my heritage. Because, it is my culture and one looks for their own self before finding other things.

There are so many traditions that have been left behind since my father came to America.
There are so many words that I don't even KNOW in Chinese.
There is a poetic language that I do not understand, nor will I ever because I don't know how to read or write.
There's a culture that I am slowly understanding, but I will always be American.

There is however, and opportunity for me to put together my Chinese culture that I know so little of and create it with the American culture that I grew up with.

Though I am Chinese, and I know many traditions in our family, I'm still very Americanized. I am so grateful that my father spoke to my brother and I in Chinese. I am grateful that my grandmother taught me the traditions in our family. I am thankful that my family still speaks to me in Chinese, because I want to be able to keep the language. My brother and cousins are slowly forgetting Chinese and it is very sad to see.

I have 2 months left. And though I have been in the studio a lot and working on animation and not being able to travel like everyone else, I am still learning SOOOoo much. I learn something new everyday (though, I do learn something new everyday in America as well..haa) but it's something that makes me think contextually about my own art and about life in general.

The people I meet, the customs in which they have, the way they speak, the way they are...

The landscape is really amazing here, and though it is so normal for people in China, I am glad that I wake up to a mountain, a little lake, people picking tea leaves from the bushes and the people speaking in Chinese. I go outside of my room to look at the environment every morning.

And there were times, when I wished I had gone with everyone else, that I wish that I was not so stubborn. Stubbornness is my greatest strength and biggest downfall.

Not sticking to one thing, is also my biggest problem. I have went through thinking of every major that I possibly wanted to do.
Advertisment, Illustration, Fine Art studio, Photography, Interactive, Film, Graphic Design, and of course I stuck with animation.

I stuck with animation because I was stubborn and wanted to learn everything in one. I wanted to do my own thing, I wanted to get a job when I get out of college. I have never, ever, been happy with my animation work. I can't draw right, I can't stick to one frame, I always have to do straight ahead. But I sometimes can't even get straight ahead right.

So I complain about not being a good animator, putting myself down, thinking that I shouldn't be an animator because I want to do so many other things, and I was always unhappy.
But I am happy that I stuck with it. I'm happy because now I understand film, photo, illustration, fine art, advertisement, whatever. I picked this major for a reason and the reason was everything that I wanted to do, just not the way I wanted to do it. And now I have realized that.

I talk a lot, I get really excited and I think, "I want to be the best. So I will be the best!" How can I be the best if I don't even understand my own major? How can I show people that I can do this if I can't even finish an animation?

I will finish my animation here. This is no lie. I don't know if it will be the best. But this is the first time I have done a short animation with the things I have learned from MCAD and CAA.

It's about time that I stop wandering around, thinking that I should be doing other things besides animation.

At least for now. <3

Chinese Painting

So I've always wanted to learn how to do Chinese Landscape painting.
I did a piece in critical studies sophomore year, experimenting with the inks and paper and everything.

But it's not the way that I was suppose to do it, I cut the mountains and then made another layer, (this is was intentional).

Anyway, so ling lao shi is a very, strong artist, he has made an animated feature film, has a studio, does design, sculpture, film, animation, everything, you name it. And of course Chinese landscape painting.

I am amazed. He says he will teach me, I think it would be amazing. <3

Soooo, If you haven't seen my fb album I posted many pictures of the Animation Festival that was held in hangzhou. It was pretty sweet I guess? Lemme refresh your memory:

Anyway, it was great times and so today, CAA held an opening for all the animation directors. I met a man named Ron Diamond and he is the guy who created awn.com and acme films. So he is a very important man in the states. 0.o I talked to him and he ended up knowing Tom Schroeder! It's funny how the world is so big...yet so small. Also wanted my contact information and gave me his business card.
Excellent.
And then I talked to this really cute Chinese French guy named Cedric Ih, he has a company called Red Cheese and it's in Hong Kong, but he does commercials and all that jazz. He was really nice, gave me a business card and said he wanted to see my film after it was finished here. So I can get it done and show it to him. Bahahaa.
Then I saw the people who made Spongebob, Kung Fu panda...other short film directors. It was crazy...Kind of like being in Hollywood but in China. Hahhaa.

Sadly i didn't get any pictures of the event, I had no time. Lol. My professor was like, "COME WITH ME." And dragged me to the 2nd floor and started talking to all these directors. I felt really under dressed cause everyone was wearing tux and like dresses..and crazy things. I don't even know. Perhaps I can get a few pictures from the school. :/ it was a sight to see.

Lol, but while i was talking to some people my mentor was like, "Pst, Ja Mei, come here." and so then we talked about how lame openings can be and he's like, "but FOOD ISN'T LAME! COME ON LET'S GO RAID THE FOOD TABLE." Lol. He's still a kid at heart. Lol.

Today was crazy and full of "important" people...Yeah, about time to start lookin at that career. . . . . .

YoCai Hua

I dunno what these flowers are called in English, but in Chinese they are called YoCai Hua. And they look like those yellow flowers I posted before.

But all the yellow flowers fall off and everything is bare and green

However, they have the prettiest surprise. <3
Their leaves turn multi colored and beautiful.

Also, I have the worse stomach flu ever, it started yesterday and I couldn't even move, I had a horrible fever and I felt like I was going to faint every ten seconds. I got on my bike and was going to die. I have horrible sharp pains in my stomach and feel like going to throw up.
Well I'm better now, but I still have horrible pains in my stomach. Sean says I have a virus caused by people not washing their hands and cooking followed by something about feces on the food.
Gross.
Which also means that I am 2 days behind animation. -_-'

Good times. I didn't have my baby with me (my D80) because I let Alang borrow it. -_-' So I borrowed my friend's little digital camera. I was sad, but I still got some pretty sweet pictures. Check it:

I dunno if I posted this same picture before, but this bike stand was never there before. They just built it along with another bike stand towards the school. It's really crazy that I can see the development in China. Everything is fucking quick. It's like one day you sleep and the next day it's there. 0.0

I can't help but take pictures of the kids, they are too adorable and I loose my shit when I see them. Lol. SO CUTE.

Well, we all crossed the street and ended up on the middle of the road. Hahahhaa. Cars in China are crazy. And so are pedestrians.

So these people are training to be waiters or like, clothing store sales people. It's really weird and military like. 0.0

We then went to the night market and shopped a little and then decided to go to a bar called the Traveler's bar.

AHAHHAHAHAHHA I had one person in mind, you know who you are. <333 (What a funny name for a bar.)

Then Momo taught me how to ride her moped. But really I just hopped on and sped off. Lol. it was sweet.

Ahhh, that's okay because I made a new friend instead. Her name is Momo (Well, nickname) <3
All day long we just chilled in restaurants and ate food, drank coffee, ate more food and talked about, well many things!
It was good times.
I needed a break from the studio and animation, except I have a lot to do tonight. :/

This is a very cute, cute coffee shop in our little town. Ha.

Ah, yes so I had an article written about me in the school newspaper! Check it:

Except they spelled my chinese name wrong and mispelled MCAD. Lol. (they really didn't edit it, which is a shame...)
Ah well. The interview basically said that I'm from America and I go to school at MCAD, they asked me why I came to China for animation instead of Japan and I said I wasn't into anime or really japanese animation, (though, that's a lie. Lol I dunno why they write it that way) and that I wanted to see what chinese schools were like. Or something in the lines of that?
They asked if the schooling was good here and I said it was very different from the school in America and that China's animation isn't as good as the one in America but it's okay because things are getting better.
Asked if it was easy to adjust here and I just talked about food. Lol. Like usual.
Asked why I came to China and i told them I wanted to travel and see the world while I'm in school because I dunno when the next time I can travel is, I also said that I am all about experiences and stories and I just wanted to experience everything!

That was basically the interview, it was very general, but it's still sweet to be in the school paper. Lol.

I'm really happy that I can walk around the streets of China and get offered to buy some tea. Not to mention some art books for discounted price.

I think i'm getting sick, but the tea lady said that this tea that I bought will help cure me in no time. Gahhhahaha. (rather, the tea is to wash out all the poison in the body. ) So fresh and beautiful. <3

Early Birthday Lolz and no sleep.

My day started off with a walk cycle....Only because I haven't slept yet, so I had to keep animating.
But then I stopped around 8 and decided to go eat breakfast and chill for the morning, and then ink some animation frames. -_-'

Everything is better in the morning.

So I then went to the studio and worked on more animation and went to class, however I fell asleep and when I woke up there was only 3 people in the class. 0.o So I went back to the studio and I forgot we were moving a bunch of things...So I helped my friends (including my mentor) move to their new studio downstairs.

So these are the kids I hang out, (Along with A Lang who is not pictured, but he was the kid who went to Shanghai with me.) Kid on the left is Da Wong, the girl is Xiao Cao and the older guy is my mentor, Wei lao shi!

Soooo then my friends wanted to make me a early birthday dinner!! I was so happy! And we made it at A Lang's house. it was amazing.

Our mentor joined us, it was sweet, and he bought all the food and A Lang cooked everything!!! Gahhh, I am so grateful!

Also we had to wash all of our veggies and pots in the bathroom sink. Lolololol

So they put a candle in the rice cooker and lit it...(since i couldn't eat cake) and was like, "you have to blow out the candle and make a wish!!!" and I was like, "uhmmmm, but.." because I expected them to sing happy birthday before hand but then I just blew out the candle and when it got pitch black in the room they started singing it. It was super cute and out of order. Lol.

New light table

Wellll.
I got a new light table because I couldn't wait anymore. They don't have 120 watt lightbulbs. How lame.

So here it is, the huge ass light table that causes me pain when I animate.(lots of splinters) Physical pain...And emotional. Ha.

Fuck you China, you don't want me to animate but I'm gonna do it and prove you wrong.

Shanghai (Extreme photo post)

Welllppp, seeing as my light table broke I decided to not do anything today and just hang out in Shanghai. It was pretty fun!
It started out with leaving at 6 am in the morning to catch a bus to the train station which takes an hour because we had to get off the bus to catch ANOTHER BUS and then get tickets to the train to Shanghai.
Except there were no seating on the bus OR on the train. So we had to stand the whole time...for like 3 hours. ugahhalkljdf Not to mention, Ah Lang didn't sleep and I slept for an hour. -_-'

So then we went on the lightrail and had to stand more. Lol. And we finally got to the one part of the city in Shanghai. I don't remember what it's called...Lol. But it's a pretty sweet place. It reminds me of Cali and Chicago put together, but everything is Chinese. It's very western...

We then decided to go to the Shanghai Art Museum and today was our lucky day because it was free. (Today is a special holiday called Qing Ming Ge, which is a holiday to respect the loved ones who have passed away and sweep the graves and make everything nice and pretty, but people usually just have it as a day off too.)

There was this artist being exhibited named, Bei Zhengjiu? Or maybe that was like a book. wtf. I can't tell. Lol, anyway he was very into these sunflowers it was kind of sweet.

There was some calligrapher there in the calligraphy room and just pumping out these writings...I wish I knew what they said. *Sigh* This is as far as I get with Chinese calligraphy, unless I some how get really lucky and understand every word written. Which is highly unlikely.

And some other things that was in the next room. This artist takes a lot of well known works and remakes them, they are pretty sweet up close and it's all collage.

This one is kind of interesting because I recognized it as this fabric...painting? that my grandmother had and I would see it everyday when I was little and I would look at it and not like the way the horses were because the legs didn't look right. So I then saw this remake on the wall and I asked my friend Ah Lang if it was a famous painting, and it wasss. It was exciting guys...-_-'

Well isn't this funny?

Funny story about this dude. He was watching me take pictures and was like, "Hey! Take a picture of me!" so I did it, and then he was like, "Are you Chinese? You sure don't act Chinese, taking all those pictures. Are you from America?" And then I was like, "uhh no no, just hanging out, taking pictures...that I like..hahaha." Lol anyway he kept making fun of me, it was great.

Anyway, So we went to this exhibition that my friend's professor was in, his name is Shao Wenhuan and he has the most amazing photographs, it's the kind you have to see it in person because he uses mixed media so you won't be able to see it in my photos. It was a duo show with another photographer named Hans Wilschut. But I was rather disappointed at this dude because there wasn't...Much of anything in his work except that it was large format and they were night. ...kayy...

So afterwards we went to other contemporary art galleries which I was really excited about and then went to a coffee shop...And finally sat down. You see all these pictures, I have NOT sat down at all from 6am-5pm. It was horrible, I'm usually all up for walking but I was not wearing the right shoes and they were wet.
We talked to Ah Lang's friends for awhile and they were really awesome! All graduated and going for their master's degree. Or they already have a job. So I exchanged numbers with a few of them and then we all went to the train station together to get back to Hangzhou.

Ah well.
So it happened, the one thing that I didn't think would. The one thing that I thought I could out smart, but obviously not.
Some lucky person has a good 700rmb in their pocket now and not me.

AFTER I JUST GOT MONEY OUT OF MY ACCOUNT BECAUSE MY DEBIT CARD WILL EXPIRE IN LIKE 2 DAYS.

The one time I don't keep an eye on my money, is when looking at books, and of course the one time i get pick pocketed is the one time that I leave the house after holing myself in for many days.
And then the one time I DO PUT MY MONEY IN MY WALLET is the one time that I get money taken out of it, that is not me.

So after I realized that my wallet had been taken out of my coat pocket I told Zhang Jing and some lady started pointing towards who she thought was the person who stole my money.
Of course the lady who did see it was MUTE. Even better. Lol.
So the mute lady pulled me towards the people who had my wallet, and of course they were just two girls who just picked up my wallet from the ground. Luckily none of my credit cards or anything got stolen, just the solid CASH MONIEZ.

Lesson number one learned, never, ever, ever, leave your wallet unattended. If you put it in your coat pocket, make sure you have your hand on it at all times. (Which is usually something I do, but not this time.)

Ahh, sorry there hasn't been any outside pictures.
You see, I'm in extreme animation mode now, for those of you who understand animation timing, this is my schedule:

Animation shit to do:
40 seconds a week
Week: 6 seconds a day
or 8 seconds a day
Animation done in: 2 months
Inking and coloring: 1 month
Backgrounds during the 3 months on "off times"
Sound and composing: 2 weeks in the states.

My room is a mess and I haven't left my dorm in 4 days.
My sleep schedule is wayyy more fucked up then it is at MCAD.
I go to bed around 7-10 am and then get up around 4-7pm.
This is the worse. I mean, I have trouble sleeping anyway, but it's not ass backwards like this. Lol.

I wish I can just take a train to Shanghai and leave for 2 days. (I can it's only an hour or so away.) But the light table calls and the frames won't animate themselves.

If I get caught up this week I am leaving. Lol. Or maybe I'll just bring my light table along to the hotel or something. -_-'

Censorship

Here's a huge difference between America and China.

You must, must, must keep your mouth shut about any sort of China issue.
No matter how much anger and pain you a feeling about the country you just don't talk about it.
Because unlike America you can't freely speak about how much you "Hate your country".
There are different set of rules.
You get punished by the government if you do say things like that.
Or even taking pictures, that is not a tourist site, which is what I have been doing. Obviously I'm not going to stop taking pictures, but I could get in a lot of trouble.

But I cannot say anymore about it. So let's leave it at that.

So yesterday I holed myself in my apartment and animate.
...Which is not a very healthy thing to do, but whatevs. (I guess it doesn't help that my school also delivers food to your apt...Haaa)

The capture stand in my school is very hard to use because the upperclassmen don't really wanna take the time to let you use the computer that has the capture stand. And I don't wanna run up and down the stairs for fuckin... 3 seconds of animation, and a pencil test that I can't use on my MAC computer.

So I made my own capture stand. LOL. Check it.

I'm also using a demo version of iStopmotion which only lasts for 5 days.
And all of my pencil tests say, "Captured with a demo version of Bionx iStopmotion"
But it's pretty good! they are quality pencil tests. Lol.

WTF is this fruit?

All my life I have seen this fruit in various calenders and pictures in asian super markets in the states. I have never, ever seen one in actual life. I don't know what it's called in English or Chinese. I just know it's a fruit that grows in China.

So today I went to go get some more paper so I could animate more.
I decided to finally try it.
I asked the fruit man how to eat it and he just laughed at me and said, "here let me open it for you." and all you do is peel the skin and eat it.

I took one small bite and it didn't taste very good, (seeing as I just brushed my teeth before i left the apt) it's kind of like any rule with some fruit, don't eat it after you brush your teeth, it will taste weird.
But after I actually bit into the fruit, it was pretty tasty. The consistency of a kiwi and the taste of...well nothing really. It was just kind of sweet.

At least I found out wtf it was. Took me 20 damn years but I finally ate it.
I'll probably by more of it, it's pretty cheap...Might as well eat it while I'm here. Hahhaa.

Haggling

Today was so awesome.
Me and my friend Angelina went downtown and decided to wander around and go shopping!
So we went on the bus and probably got really close to where our destination was but there was this HORRIBLE HORRIBLE traffic jam. So we just got off and decided to walk like everyone else:

Ah we get to this park area and there's A BILLION PEOPLE THERE. Omg I can't even explain, it's so damn crowded, but Hangzhou is a very "tourist" place, I can understand why though, it's a beautiful city.

So a lot of people had their wedding today or something and they were doing a photoshoot, Lolzzzz.

We went to a Papa John's. You guys don't even know how happy I was to eat some American food. Lololol. It tastes okay, I think it's missing the MSG. LOL. For some reason the pizza actually looked neon yellow. wtf.

I wish I knew what he was writing.

Okay on this street it is called, "The Night Market" because it is filled with people who are selling their shit on the street. You can get fake Louis Vuttion purses, to shoes, clothes, jewelry, make up, toys anything bascially.

But of course you have to haggle like crazy.
I was not very good the first time and spent 30rmb on this cheap (but cute) little shirt.
Oh the currency is 1 USD is 6 RMB.

So the 2nd time I saw these really cute boots and the lady wanted 180rmb for them.
I was like, "Man, 180 rmb is a lot of money, I'll give you 50 bucks for it."
She then tells me that, "You know I'm closing soon and so is everyone else, how about I'll give them to you for 160"
I told her that was still too much and said, "50" once again.
She took out her calculator and punched in a number and handed it to me. (This is how they deal with haggling, through a calc...I dunno why.) It read 130.
I then punched in "50" once again and handed it back to her.
She looked at me and said, "oh I have to make a living little lady, how about I'll give it to you for..." typed in the number once again and it read, "100"
I laughed and told her, "50"
And she goes, "Okay the lowest I'll go is 80"
And then I was like, "well go right ahead, I'll just look at some other places and come back okay?"
That's when things got a little around my price. She then said, "Ohhh don't do that okay, here 65 dollars that's it."
and then I said, "60" She then responded, "65, come on, it's only 5 bucks more." and I said, "Oh plz 60 is only 5 bucks less." So then she agreed on 60 and that was that. Lol. So in terms of USD the boots were around 8 bucks.
IT'S SO INTENSE. So if you ever go to China guys, NEVER give them full price if you're going to markets like this...Always demand half of whatever they are offering or lower.

So then I got some tights, (some lady asked 65 bucks and i got it down to 12 lol)

Chinese PBR

China has the most amazing fruit. It's so fresh and sweet. I'm eating a pineapple on a stick that is carved like this all around China. It's only a buck for the thing. AWESOMEEE. Why doesn't the Minnesota State Fair just have fruit on a stick (That's not fried) instead?!?!?

Soo, in China there isn't a variety of beers like there is in the US.
I miss the fact that I can choose the various isles of beer.

However, I was looking at some beers that my school has. (Yes, the student store sells beerz, cigs and you know snack foods.) and one of the cans seemed rather familiar.
and I looked at the fine print and it was the all known font and color of PBR:

LOLZ So, this is the tall boy can of PBR, it's called "Blue Lion" here.
It tastes pretty much like PBR. I'm not really understanding the alcohol percentage here. It's either 8% or 3.5% Lol.

The air is oh so thick

When I step out of my building to go to school I can't even breathe. It's horrible.

The camera is not lying, for realz

I just liked this shot. It's from where I live, on the 6th floor.

There has been a lot of construction lately around my school, so there are a lot of cranes and what not,
I was walking back to my apt from my school and at that time I didn't think I needed my camera because I was just doing work at the studio. (So I very much regret that I didnt take my camera at the time.)
So I see these people on the street in this giant puddle and I thought they were just rinsing their feet in the puddle?
But as I got a lot closer they had a bunch of buckets and flashlights and they were yelling, "THERE'S ONE!" and caught whatever it was they were catching.
I thought they were catching frogs, which is pretty common, they just hang around sometimes. Lol. But it ended up being little fishies in the puddle.
How the fuck does a bunch of fish get in a puddle in this road?

There's fish moving, but it got blurred...Sorry bout that.

Does everyone remember what my school looks like? If not let me remind you.

Sooo, at MCAD we have the tiny, tiny, tiny animation studio where the capture stand is at your convenience, the light tables are there, and the MAC computers are huge and beautiful. We also have a elevator, though it is slow, sometimes it's nice to ride on it.

Here we have 2 #4 buildings (It's just the 2 animation buildings) to do animation, but only about 3 classrooms to do it all in. No one ever knows where the capture stand is and the hole punch along with the computers. Lol.

I work in the 3rd building on the 3rd floor with the interns and awesome professor wei. (soon it will be back on the 1st floor)

CAA doesn't have any elevators in the school, or at least in the buildings that I'm in because they are media based.

I have to run from the 3rd building on the 3rd floor and go up to the 4th building on the top floor which is the 5th floor and get the key to use the capture stand and run all the way down to the 2nd floor for probably a second or 2 of animation and run all the way back up the stairs and return the key. Lol. Then go back to my studio. Luckily today, I just used the one on the 5th floor.

They also use this program called CPT which is PC based, so I can't capture and keep my pencil tests because I have an apple computer.

So I have to use my memory to remember which frames are slow and what I need to change, etc, etc.

Now I am VERY thankful of MCAD even though I still think the animators get the shitty part of the deal at the school, I am very thankful that we have MACS, light tables, stop motion studio, blah blah blah. That is not scattered all over the place and have programs that I understand.

At the same time, it feels like a fucking boot camp art school, they have loud music to wake you up for class, and you have to go and exercise at 6 am (Thank god I'm an international student, otherwise I would have to participate in that), gates close at 11 and if you are out by that time you can't get in or vise versa.
I feel trained in animation that I would never even have imagined.

Basically, because I am not handed everything I want like I can get at MCAD, I have to use other ways of animating. It's sweet, kind of makes me feel like I can animate ALL THE TIME. Ahhh, who doesn't want that? Ha...

On the bright side, at least I'm getting a lot of exercise.
And perhaps appreciating MCAD a little more. <3

It's so damn hot here.

So, spring has begun and the winter rain has disappeared.
I'm really happy because spring is my favorite season however...
IT'S SO DAMN HOT. Shit, It's like summer in MPLS, or Texas!!
Because the air is so polluted here it makes it harder to breathe, it's sticky hot and that's gross. Lol.

When I was little I use to eat these vegetable buns my dad made whenever he had time. It was the greatest thing in the world and the last time I remember my dad actually making these was probably 5 years ago. But they were vegetarian pork buns and it was the most delicious thing in the world. I am sad because everytime I come home to Portland I never get to eat them because my dad never has time to make them.
However, today I went to this place that makes vegetable buns, pork buns, steamed buns, red bean buns, blah blah blah list goes on.
AWESOME. China I love your foodddd.

I started doing an illustration. (honestly don't know why I didn't start earlier) But I found this piece of like, flimsy cardboard on the stairs that someone was throwing away. So I just started drawing on it with watercolor pencils.

Yesterday when I went to the studios to animate and I was talking to one of my friends, His name is ah long, and I was talking about how there's so much cool contemporary art. But he didn't know wtf I was talking about so I gave him an artist named, Ai Wei Wei and he was like, "Oh yeah, he's one of my friends! He's a very good contemporary artist." If you guys don't know him, he's the one who designed the Beijing Olympics stadium. But he has done a lot more and he's really amazing.

SOOO COOOLLL. Okay time to go animate my life away. Lol.

The mountain

Well today I went to the mountains that I see all the time from my back porch.

However I think I need to go back by myself because then I can venture more, I like to keep going to random places. Lol. It was still a lot of fun with my new found friend "zhang jing"

We had to climb this huge hill which was the roof of this tunnel for cars. Lol.

This is a grave, but I took the picture and Zhang Jing was like, "DON'T TAKE A PICTURE OF THAT!! IT'S A GRAVE!!" Ohhhh Diana Chao you have lots to learn. Lol.

So we sat on the mountain and talked about Chinese politics and schooling. It's really interesting to hear, she wasn't bias about it so it was nice to hear the "total truth" in terms of Taiwan and Tibet and the way the systems are about school. I was so happy that she was teaching me all the Chinese history that I didn't really pay attention to in America. She was really interested to hear what America thought about the whole ordeal.
In China, it is a very touchy subject to talk about politics. You just don't do it because it causes problems. Unlike America where you can talk about whatever you please and do whatever you want, there are certain things you just don't talk about here. And if you do want to talk about it, you find someone cool like Zhang Jing and they let you know about it. Lol.

Animatic and clubbin

Well, yesterday I finished my animatic, though I feel like it's too fast. Perhaps some critique would be good? That would be really awesome. Also, at the end of the animatic when the letter drops, the color changes to colder colors. I'm the laziest animator ever. Lol.

And then I decided to go the bars with my friends.
Let's just say, the night is young and we were out until 7 in the morning.
the school closes the gates to the dorm at 11 pm, so we had to club all night. Lol.

So at this bar we played this Chinese game involving dice.
It's an awesome game, however I didn't understand the first couple of times so I had to drink a lot. Lol.

Yesterday I was working on some colors for my animation. And then I decided to drink. Lol. Soo, I guess I didn't progress a lot, however I know how I will color my animation! I think all the backgrounds will be done in watercolor pencil. At least for the apartment and then for the outside of the apartment, I haven't decided yet. It might just be digital.

Also, I decided to drink last night...and I pretty much died.
They made me drink this wine called, "bai jo" Which means "White alcohol" Er...But it's like, rice wine.

Ha, I'll bring some back and you guys can try it for yourself. Lol.

These kids are awesome, and they kicked my ass in Chess and this Chinese card game. Ugahh, I got so wasted because everytime I lost I had to take another shot of that bai jo or some tequila. Yeahhh Awesome. Oh yes, the kid in front his name is "zen gong" and he's from shanghai, the one in the middle is Adrian, he's from France and the last one is Andy and he's from America, but he doesn't know any english. Lol.

So, today I went downtown with Adrian and Andy and decided not to go to class. I know, it's bad guys. Whatevs.

The Macdon's fries taste the same in America, so I assume everything else tastes like American food. But it's really expensive to eat western food here.

This man on the side sings a song about a story and you sit there and watch this movie thing. It's really sweet!

These are the locals where you can buy AMAZING food here...bahhhhhh, that's the real food you want.

Ahhh, good times. I really enjoyed today, even if it rained a bunchh when we got back and then got drenched...Lol oh wellll.

Today I went to class and once again, I told my story, however I redid ALL my boards to look better, the way I want them to look, I thought they were pretty fucking solid. I mean there are a few panels I really need to fix!
You can see, maybe I am wrong:

This is some of the stuff my mentor fixed, but was not shown during class because...He's not really my mentor, he's just another awesome teacher. But anyway continue:

So I mean, there's obviously some shots that you can see that I to need work on, but once again, they told me the same exact thing is that, "I need to think about it more." COME ON IT'S THE 3RD FUCKING WEEK, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! So I went up to one of the teachers after class and asked, "I can you tell me what I need to work on? What is it that I need to "think about." "
The teacher said, "Well, I mean if it is the newspaper you want people to see, then you have to hold the frame."
I said, "Yes, of course, but this is a storyboard not an animatic, so what is unclear to you that I should fix?"
He told me that basically the piece is too conceptual, people don't understand conceptual things and that I should keep thinking about it.

I like abstract, conceptual, contextual animations. I like people to THINK about what they are watching. Why am I leading your eye this way? Why is he doing that?

I gave the teacher one look that said, "I don't care anymore I'm going to do it."

I said nothing else, I didn't say thank you, I just left. I got so frustrated that I went up to the animation studio and started crying out of anger and frustration because I didn't understand what they wanted.

My mentor (Wai laosi) told me that I need to do it, I just need to start the animation and he could see my anger and frustration because he was the one helping me throughout the whole animation. He understood from the moment I told him the first version. He said a lot of animation teachers in China don't do conceptual pieces like that and only do animation in terms of "jokes" or kid animation.

So he told me not to listen to them and that I should start doing the animation regardless to what they are saying. Then show them the actual piece when I am done because that is the only way they will understand.

Usually I push the limits on a lot of things, I see how far I can get away with things in art. But here I am scared, I don't know what to expect. And they don't give good critiques. I feel I have pushed the limits anyway on accident, If you see on the 11th page there is a bowl with chopsticks in the middle of it. In Chinese superstition that means that you are feeding the dead. I used it as a foreshadow for whatever is coming up next, which involves death.
When I got to that page during class everyone started talking, and being really surprised that I put that in there.

I'm doing my animatic tomorrow, (apparently we don't have class tomorrow...to go and DRAW our storyboards.) we were suppose to have our storyboards today, the teacher gave everyone 3 days to do it and cut monday's class so they can finish it. No one did it except for me and this other kid who decided to do an animatic.

I'm trying really, really hard to understand the conservative ways of China, but coming from America it's really hard. I had so much freedom back in the states and now I have all these restrictions and no freedom to think. So far, no one has this idea that I have in my class. So I feel good about it.

Passport dayyy

Today I decided to go downtown and retrieve my passport from the visa place.
So I took the bus, It takes about 40 minutes to an hour to get downtown which fucking sucks. Lol. But it was still entertaining.

Here's some things I saw from the bus:

A mission to retrieve my passport. I had to ask a billion people where the passport place was. They would only tell me 2 streets and then I would have to ask another person. -_-' It was rather annoying. Lol.

Yes Susan, Nate, Leggerz...There is a Chinese Macdons. Lol. I'll show you more western restaurants once I explore the world of China more. Lol.

I had this delicious dessert at some fruit place. It had coconut, red bean and some other thing i don't know what it's called in english but it's really good. In china, if you spend a certain amount of money they give you money to go eat food down in the little restaurants. AWESOME I LOVE FOOD AND SHOPPING.

Here are some clothes I bought today, ahahaha soon I will adapt the Chinese style.

It's a lot of pressure to buy clothes in China because they want you to look good. They stand there watching you look at clothes, and then they come up and suggest other clothes, but they are really good at it because they take one look at you and know exactly all the clothes you would look at or would buy. It's amazing. 0.0 This is why everyone in china is stylish. Lol.

I forgot to mention that on the way back from the bus there was a old man singing some songs really loud, I wish I knew what he was singing, I think he was singing about the Lord or something, that's the only word I could understand. I asked the other people on the bus but they either ignored me or they also said they didn't understand the man. A high schooler was really annoyed by the man. Lol.
I liked it. It was probably the best bus ride i've ever had. If only I had a sound recorder for you guys to hear the amazing sounds that I've been hearing.

A walk around town

I made this last night, i don't think I'll use that as my actual background, but it's what the animation will feel like.

I needed some background ideas for my animation, so I went around town and took some pictures and ended up in some construction site. Lol

Oh yes, I got yelled at by some guy driving a van on the construction site. He thought it was weird for me to be taking all these pictures. He told me, "There's nothing to take pictures of."
And then a kid around my age came up to me with a huge gash around his eye (he opened the door for this van) and asked me why i was taking pictures.
I told him I was from America and he told me he was from Italy. He also told me that there is nothing to take a picture of, but I insisted that there was.
But his friend laughed at me and started mocking me because I from the US.
I didn't care so I went on my way and took pictures, he was watching me the whole time after he closed the gate but I told him I saw his shoes and pointed, it was a good laugh.

After this walk a woman sold me some mangos and grapes for 2.10 rmb. Which is kind of a lot, but whatever. Lol. And then I got the most amazing bubble tea everrr. China makes the best for realz.

Ahhh finally a lecture.

So today I decided to go to a sustainability lecture.
But I didn't find out until like after I got back from the grocery store and I think the Chinese kids thought it was an animation lecture and it wasn't. I was so happy for that.

I missed the first 10 minutes of the lecture so I didn't get to hear who he was, but I guess he is from Germany and teaches there as well. I think he curates shows because none of it was his work, they were all young designers, sculptures and furniture artists who worked with scientists to make their art workable and economically friendly, and help make the world a little better through their art.

The bees solidified the vase

This one was to help birds build nests or something similar to that.

I didn't really understand this one...It was about friendships and the way we smell each other and recognize them through that smell?

This one was my favorite, this artist figured out a way to make bubbles solid, so he made these awesome sculptures with these bubbles where they can float by themselves if there is the light in there to activate it.

I wish I knew the correct artists names because it was really hard to hear the guy speak in this huge space.

I realized that the people that I am currently hanging out with don't really care for contemporary art. Which really sucks because I am all about it. Lol. Not to mention China is huge in contemporary art nowadays so...I would like to see them while I'm here.

Storyboards

So yesterday I went in front of a class of about 30-35 students and told my story in Chinese. Not only did I feel like I've embarrassed myself but also a dumbass.
When I told it to them, I thought I did a pretty good job in explaining everything. Apparently not...After I had told them my story the only thing they told me was,

"You should think about it more."

What kind of a fucked up crit is that? They gave everyone else a decent fucking crit and then the only thing they say to me is that I need to think about it more. I was up there for 2 minutes.

I think it's because I'm not an "actual student" so they don't really care about me.

But, it's quite alright. I'm hanging out with a bunch of MFA's for animation and another teacher who is in a standard of Doctors degree in media arts. (or something like that.) And he's worked on many commercials, films, and animations. So, I am making him my mentor. He gave me a very good crit about my animation and told me suggestions and what not, along with the MFA's.

The story:
A man lives in his apartment alone and his apartment slightly alters reality.
So essentially he deludes himself of reality.
He wakes up and hears the alarm radio and it says, "today it will be sunny and bright!" just telling the weather.
The man gets up and turns off the radio and decides to make coffee, however the outside is raining, of course he doesn't notice and goes along with his day.
He makes coffee and decides to read the newspaper and the newspaper says "The economy is great" and from an outside view you see a whole mess of things, garbage on the street, ruined buildings and everything.

There is this last part i need to figure out which is why some of the boards are blank.

He then receives a letter saying his mother has died, a point of reality that has actually hit him.
He is in disbelief and throws the letter on the ground.
The letter then turns his whole apartment back into reality. Not depressing or anything, just a wake up call.

End.

This story isn't about the man, it's his surroundings.
Ah, i need some input...so if you have an idea that i should do for the last part (not conclusion) that would be awesome.

Sometimes I feel like I'm in a boot camp where really loud music wakes you up while you're sleeping and then shutting off the internet at certain times.
Learning how to cook with a rice cooker.
Hanging my clothes to dry which takes like many days. Lol.

It's really great. Except for the loud obnoxious music that plays over the intercom.
And the fact that they shut off the internet at a certain time. Lol.

But all in all it's been pretty great so far.

I haven't had a solid idea for my animation yet and it's due tomorrowwww. Oh my.

How Ironic

I'm here in a beautiful place with beautiful people and lots of inspiration.
However nothing is coming to me yet and we have to have a story for our 3-4 minute animation by Monday.
My class is like a philosophy, psychology and animation class put in one. So the first half of the class we analyze a bunch of animations and then the 2nd half of class we talk about philosophers and what not and trying to relate it to our animations.

I HAVE NO CLUE WTF TO DO GUYS. Ubahlaksdjf.

Well, here's some pictures I've been meaning to post. lol

There's a guy who brings his goats all the time to school so they can eat the grass and play. Cute.

This was at west lake, everyone here has umbrellas. No joke. You don't see someone without an umbrella...It's also kind of like a fashion statement here. Lol I caved and got an umbrella. It rains everyday in the winter.

Everything has been crazy since I got to "my part" of the school.
It's a lot more run down than the fine arts department, which i was very sad to leave it.

Here is the place I am staying for the next 5 months, I live by myself on the international floor (All the international students live by themselves):

Yesss...Apparently there is 22 buildings here but uhm, I've only been to like 6 of them. Lol.
I haven't even stepped foot in the library yet! I gotta go do that tomorrow.

So, CAA is very much like MCAD. This place is in the middle of nowhere and all you have are markets and more markets. And it's work, work, work all the time.
I takes 40 minutes to get to the city by bus and I haven't taken it yet. Perhaps this weekend.

I had a very hard time adjusting, but I am starting to get use to it now. I have essentially one class for the semester. We meet everyday and it's the same 2 teachers teaching the class. I think it's an advanced animation course.
I have to produce a 3-4 minute animation 5 minutes is max.
The longest I've done is 3 minutes but that was working with 2 other people and it was stop motion.
MCAD said if my animation is up to par then they will give me 15 credits upon my return. WOOOOOooOooOo hopefully all goes well and I finish the damn thing huh?

Also, it's really easy to get lost in the school because it's so big. They don't have elevators...except for one building which I accidently went into and it was some other like design firm (like design works) and I ran into some other sculpture professor...kind of and he told me to sit down and drink tea with him. Lol.

Shit is crazy here but I like it. It's a new story and a new way of thinking.

Hangzhou People

Today I decided to take some pictures of the people.

I'm starting to get use to China, earlier I had a huge culture shock.
Because I was born in America I everything seemed "normal" and nothing out of the ordinary.
Now that I am in China I realized that we're really, really spoiled.
If 1 us dollar is 6 dollars and 84 cents rmb in China, then hell, we can live like kings and queens!
Everything is becoming more clear, I understand a lot of the things my grandmother use to tell me when I was little that didn't make a whole lot of sense because we were living so well in America.
People are really respectful to others here. They call the elderly "old masters" or "teachers" because they are, and they have plenty of stories to tell and wise things to say.
People don't speak english here, everything is in Chinese and everyone speaks Chinese. The Chinese MAKE FUN OF Americans. They say it in front of their face, even if they are friends with them because they don't understand Chinese.

I think coming to China was a really good idea.

Especially with the few days to myself before school starts.

Speaking of which, registration is tomorrow! My new friend is picking me up from the place I am staying and then we're going to register tomorrow. I finally get to pick my classes. Awesomeeee.

So I walked around my school today, well the fine arts department and it is amazing.
Of course everything is closed so there isn't much art work up.

So then I decided to go inside and I started seeing some student work, probably from last semester.

That was the view of my seat going to Shanghai.
Everything was very blue and relaxing. However I never saw night on the plane because when I got to Shanghai it was already 5:30pm monday. I left the states 7am on Sunday...
I either lost a day or gained one. I have no idea.

I got off the plane in Shanghai and I had to go through the immigration place so I can tell them that I'm here and how long I'm staying, yada yada yada.
I guess my plane got in early and so I wanted awhile for the guy who was suppose to pick me up. He saw me and we were on our way...

We drove to his work place and I ate some food there. Oh yeah, so you guys think that New York and Chicago drivers are really bad? I think not. EVERYONE HERE DRIVES CRAZY and all the pedestrians are crazy for walking in the middle of the street. Cars don't stop for you. They just keep going. I almost got hit by a car today (in Hangzhou).
Anywho, so after I ate he dropped me off at some hotel and paid for it and then told me that he would come pick me up at 7:30am.

So I stayed in this hotel and then I decided to walk around and smoke my last cig after he left. I didn't know what the word for lighter is in Chinese so I waited around the lobby until I saw some guy light up his cig. (Oh yeah, you can smoke anywhere in china. Hotels, cafe's, bars, airports. where ever.) The air is not clean here. I came back after wandering around shanghai and the guard tried to stop me and chase me down because he didn't know that i was staying there. Ha...

The next day (today) I hopped on a train from Shanghai to Hangzhou. I talked to some random guy who said he would help me find my school when we got off. Except I didn't know that someone was picking me up.

Ended up that a really tall boy was holding up a sign with my name on it and then I ventured off with them. He was accompanied by 2 other girls:

They were super friendly and we all got on a taxi and went to some vegetarian place and then went to the school that I'm going to (China Academy of Arts) luckly one of the girls goes to the same school as me and so we are going to registration together.

I'm currently staying in the fine arts department dorm at the school, but it's not my dorm, I guess mine is on the other side with all the media arts kids...Which, i have no idea where that is. Lol. But here's the place I am staying:

Seeing as I'll be leaving soon I decided to make a new blog just for China!!
So, here is where I'll be posting all my cool China things.

I'm not there yet, but I'll be leaving on Sunday the 15th at 7 in the morning! Then arriving in Shanghai on the 16th (Seeing as China some how can see the future.) at 5:30pm.

School doesn't start till the 23rd, but hopefully I'll find some internetz and post some pictures for you guys.
